The YMCA of Auburn-Lewiston recognized Brian DuBois with one of its highest honors recently at its annual Biddy Basketball Awards Banquet. DuBois received the William J. Hood Outstanding Volunteer Award for his years coaching children of all ages at the YMCA and for his extraordinary commitment to the 2015-16 season.

The Maine Legislature recently honored Rev. Harold Churchill, pastor of the First United Pentecostal Church of Lewiston, on the occasion of his retirement. Sen. Nate Libby of Lewiston spoke in the Senate Chamber and presented Rev. Churchill with a Legislative Sentiment in recognition of his work with the church.

Team Neon cheerleaders include Madeleine Albert, Mackenzie Almy, Kelsea Anderson, Kaylee Arsenault, Anna Belleau, Jayden Blais, Kylie Danforth, Jada Deah, Hannah Dube, Isabelle Dube, Adeline Fabian, Lauren Fletcher, Mackenzie Grenier, Ella Houghton, Katelyn Ingerson, Lola Jones, Bella Keneborous, Katie Lavallee, Emilie Levasseur, Abigail Levasseur, Reese Maynard, Libby McIntyre, Kali Monteiro, Sage Moore, Maddie Morgan, Sydni Rice, Kendra Wood and Jillian Wilde. The team is coached by Kassandra Bowen, Collin Hamel and Element All Stars owner Matt Hanley.

After kicking off its season in January, Team Neon of Element All Stars, a local competitive All Star Cheering Program, is on track for another successful campaign. After an impressive first season last year, the squad, consisting of 27 girls ages 9 to 14, has moved up in class to the Large Level 2 Junior Division, where they now compete against accomplished teams from throughout New England and the East Coast.

Maine Second District Congressman Bruce Poliquin received the Spirit of Enterprise Award from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce recently in recognition of his near-perfect score of 95% – among the highest ratings of all members of Congress – by the pro-business group for his work and votes to support job creation in Maine during his first year in Washington.

The Cities of Lewiston and Auburn were officially accepted for membership in the Réseau des Villes Francophone et Francophiles d’Amérique (Francophone and Francophile Cities Network of America) at a ceremony held at the Dolard and Priscilla Gendron Franco Center recently during “La Semaine de la Francophonie” (Francophone Week) festivities.

The announcement was made by Elaine Roop, Franco Center board president, and Jacynthe Blais Jacques, director of Cultural and Language Programs at the Center and a board member for the Franco-American Collection at USM’s L-A College. A local organizing committee, which included staff and volunteers from the Franco Center, the mayors and administrators from both cities, the Franco-American Collection, the L-A Metro Chamber of Commerce, the L-A Economic Growth Council, librarians from Lewiston and Auburn and others, initiated the process for the twin cities to join RVFFA.

Central Maine Medical Center will present its 20th annual Spring Gala, “The Mad Hatters Ball,” on Saturday, April 9 at the Kora Shrine Center in Lewiston. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Special Delivery Family Birthing Center as part of a several step process to construct a new Maternity and NICU suite at CMMC.

Five choirs and two orchestras will come together in the luxurious expanse of the Basilica of Sts. Peter and Paul in Lewiston on Sunday, April 3 at 4 p.m. to perform two pieces by Ludwig van Beethoven: his Missa Solemnis, Opus 123 and Meeres Stille, Opus 112.

Produced by the Maine Music Society and Bates College, the concert will feature the choirs and orchestras of these two organizations, as well as the chamber choirs of Edward Little and Lewiston High Schools and the Schola Cantorum of the Basilica, all under the direction of Maine Music Society and Bates College choral program artistic director John Corrie.

The Lewiston Blue Devils soccer team was recognized by the State Legislature recently for winning the 2015 Class A state championship. Led by Coach Mike McGraw, the team finished the season a perfect 18-0 en route to its first ever state championship title. Sen. Nate Libby of Lewiston recognized the players and coaches during the Senate session.

Mechanics Savings Bank has donated $1,000 to the American Heart Association-American Stroke Association. The funds will be used to sponsor this year’s Central Maine Heart Walk, scheduled for September 18. Proceeds from the event will support life-saving research, educational programs for medical professionals and the public, and community outreach and advocacy.
