Local music groups team to present Missa Solemnis

Five choirs and two orchestras will come together in the luxurious expanse of the Basilica of Sts. Peter and Paul in Lewiston on Sunday, April 3 at 4 p.m. to perform two pieces by Ludwig van Beethoven: his Missa Solemnis, Opus 123 and Meeres Stille, Opus 112.

Produced by the Maine Music Society and Bates College, the concert will feature the choirs and orchestras of these two organizations, as well as the chamber choirs of Edward Little and Lewiston High Schools and the Schola Cantorum of the Basilica, all under the direction of Maine Music Society and Bates College choral program artistic director John Corrie.

A deeply moving piece, the Missa Solemnis is rarely performed because of the large size of the orchestra and the demanding scope of the music. To hear it in the magnificent Basilica with a full orchestra and over 150 voices will be a rare treat not to be missed.

The basilica is located at 122 Ash Street in Lewiston. Tickets are $25 for the general public or $10 for students. For more information or to buy tickets, call L/A Arts at 782-7228 or see www.mainemusicsociety.org.
