The City of Auburn has announced the retirement of Economic Development Director Roland Miller. Employed with the city for 35 years, Miller started work on January 7, 1980 as Director of the Community Development Department and was promoted to Economic Development Director in December of 2000. He will retire at the end of November.

A native of Wisconsin, Miller received his Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Wisconsin at Oshkosh and later served on the school’s faculty. He served as the Deputy Director of the Community Development Department of Oshkosh, where he oversaw Planning, Grant Administration, Redevelopment, Housing, Codes and Ordinances and Transportation, and later as the Planning Analyst for the Portage County Area-wide Planning Committee in Stevens Point, Wisconsin.

Nine recent graduates of the Nursing Assistant course at the Maine College of Health Professions have passed the Maine competency examination. This group of students was the first accepted into Central Maine Healthcare’s new “Earn While You Learn” program. The cost of the program is paid by Central Maine Healthcare and students are paid to attend the program. They will work at CMMC, Rumford Hospital or Bridgton Hospital for at least two years.

The Maine Wildlife Park will present their popular and growing annual Halloween Fest on Friday and Saturday, October 23 and 24, from 5:30 to 9 p.m. Adults and kids alike should wear their costumes to get into the spooky spirit of Halloween while enjoying a crisp fall evening, when park staff and volunteers will stop at nothing to provide those attending with new thrills and chills.

Center Street Dental will host its fifth annual Halloween Candy Buy Back this year at an exciting new location: Norway Savings Bank Arena at 985 Turner Street in Auburn. When your little ones stop by on Sunday, November 1 between 4:30 and 6:30 p.m., not only will they receive $1 for every pound of candy they turn in, but their school will receive 50 cents, and their entire family will get to take part in a free public skate!

Mechanics Savings Bank is seeking photos that capture the beauty of Auburn, Brunswick, Lewiston or Windham regions for their calendar photo contest. The photos can be from any season. For their game against Brown University at Norway Savings Bank Arena in Auburn, the Lady Black Bears will wear these special uniforms in support of the fight against breast cancer.

The Norway Savings Bank Arena will host an NCAA Division I women’s hockey regular season game between the University of Maine Lady Black Bears and Brown University on Friday, October 23 at 7 p.m.

The team is excited about their 2015-16 season and that it will include a trip to Auburn. “I know that this team will represent our university and state with pride,” said Maine Head Coach Richard Reichenbach. “They are tough, competitive, hungry, skilled, and ready for the challenge of moving this program forward.”

The Lady Black Bears roster includes Auburn native Taylor Landry, a two-year captain at Edward Little High School who scored 143 career-goals, 32 in her senior season.

Named Best of Show was Lewiston-Auburn photographer Jim Walker’s “Jingle Bells.”

The Maine Professional Photographers Association recently opened its “heART of Photography” show at Frontier Café in Brunswick. Works on display in the juried exhibition were selected by acclaimed photojournalist Robert Freson, who has to his credit covers for many national magazines, including “Look,” “Esquire,” and “National Geographic.” His subjects have included notable locales and luminaries around the world, including Sophia Loren, Dwight D. Eisenhower and Princess Diana.

The Best of Show award was presented to Lewiston-Auburn photographer Jim Walker for his entry “Jingle Bells.” Walker lives in Auburn and has a portrait studio on Lisbon Street in Lewiston. Also receiving awards were works by notable photographers Tim Byrne, Barbara Tobey, Michael Cempa, Dan Zukowski, Joanne Lee and Jim Walker.

All works in the show are for sale and on view until January 6. Proceeds benefit the association’s scholarship fund. Frontier Café is located in the Fort Andross Mill at 14 Main Street in Brunswick.

Central Maine Community College has announced that it will launch a men’s hockey program, to begin play in the 2016-17 season. The team plans to compete in the American Collegiate Hockey Association, an organization of over 415 college- and university-affiliated programs. Now celebrating its 24th season, the ACHA provides structure, regulates operations and promotes the quality of collegiate ice hockey.
