The acclaimed documentary poses difficult questions about the challenges of aging with dignity.

SeniorsPlus will present a screening of the documentary “Nine to Ninety” on Monday, April 11 at 5 p.m. in Room 103 of Kirk Hall at Central Maine Community College. A reception and discussion with the filmmakers and some of the cast will follow. “Nine to Ninety” is the love story of Phyllis and Joe Sabatini, who, at ages 89 and 90, live in the home of their daughter and son-in-law, where they relish their time with their young granddaughter, Jacqueline. But as the family struggles to make ends meet and the grandparents’ health problems escalate, Phyllis becomes determined to free her daughter from the burden of caring “for everyone from nine to ninety.” When Phyllis makes a difficult decision to move 3,000 miles away to live with their other daughter, she faces parting from Joe, her husband of 62 years. Phyllis’ choice ignites bigger conversations about when the best way to say “I love you” is to say “goodbye” and how to age with dignity.

Family members are encouraged to attend and to participate in the post-screening conversation, which will focus on growing old and dying, as well as the making of the film. Resources will be provided to audience members to help guide the conversation.

The film premiered in Toronto at Hot Docs Film Festival, was nominated for “Best Short Film” at the International Documentary Association Awards and has been selected for the prestigious American Film Showcase, in which the State Department brings award-winning contemporary American films to audiences around the world. Part of a New England tour, this screening is sponsored by Maine’s Area Agencies on Aging and their community partners and is made possible by grants from the Bingham Program, Maine Community Foundation, and Maine Health Access Foundation.
