Bates event cancelled
The Bates College Conservation Area walk scheduled for Saturday, November 17 has been cancelled.
“Happy Together” concert to benefit Friends of Pettingill Park
The concert will feature six duos of various musical styles, including guitarist Denny Breau and his wife Ann, a flautist with jazz and classical training.
Six popular duos from Maine will perform at Denny Breau’s “Happy Together” concert to support ongoing improvements at Lewiston’s Pettingill School Park. Taking place Sunday, November 25, from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Gendron Franco Center in Lewiston, this will be Breau’s fifth fundraising concert to benefit the park project spearheaded by the Friends of Pettingill group. Tickets are $20 per person and are available at the Franco Center’s web site.
Connie Francis tribute show returns to Franco Center
In addition to Krista Johnson reprising her role as the top-charting singer, the “Connie Combo” includes Louis Philippe as Music Director and pianist, original 1994 cast member Tom O’Donnell on guitar, Jimmy McGirr on bass, and Joe Napoleone on drums.
Louis Philippe’s Reindeer Productions will present its popular musical tribute to top-charting female vocalist Connie Francis, “Among My Souvenirs,” on Sunday, November 18 at 2 p.m. at the Gendron Franco Center in Lewiston.
Volunteer to discuss Peace Corps experience at APL
Since June of 2017, Selena Wallace has lived in the municipality of Tinambac in the Philippines, where she works on community-based development projects.
Current Peace Corps volunteer Selena Wallace will present a program called “My Life in the Peace Corps” on Tuesday, November 20 at 3 p.m. at Auburn Public Library. The program is free and designed for all ages. Since departing in June of 2017, Wallace has been living in Tinambac, a municipality in Camarines Sur province in the Philippines, where she has been working with local partner organizations to advance sustainable, community-based development projects that improve the lives of local people.
Dewitt receives Maine Wing’s Legislative Officer of the Year Award

Lt. Col. Jerry Dewitt, Recruiting Officer and Government Relations Advisor for Maine Wing, was recently awarded the George Texido Legislative Officer of the Year Award at the group’s Northeast Regional Conference. Dewitt assists Maine Wing with its cadet programs, recruiting opportunities, and contact with the Maine Legislature. He has recruited 20 members of Maine’s State Legislature and nine representatives of Maine’s Congressional Delegation. Additionally, he is involved at the Squadron Level as an Assistant Aerospace Education Officer and Assistant PAO.
Governor’s Address: We Must Always Appreciate Our Veterans
This year, Veterans Day marks the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I, which ended on the “eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month” of 1918. It changed the course of the Twentieth Century.
World War I was a new kind of warfare, a global conflict fought with new technologies, like airpower and chemical weapons. The war that was fought to make the world “safe for democracy” forever changed the way we fight. But the essential element of that fight to defend our freedom is our people. Veterans Day is the day we pause to remember those who have fought in every American war, both before World War I and since.
During the past eight years, the First Lady and I have made supporting our military, their families, and our veterans a priority. We’ve met thousands of Maine veterans, and each of them has touched our hearts.
Fallen Game Warden Tribute Run
Since the bureau was established in 1880, 15 Maine game wardens have died in the line of duty.
The Maine Warden Service recently hosted its 11th annual Fallen Game Warden Tribute Run, established to bring awareness to the 15 Maine game wardens who have died in the line of duty since the bureau was established in 1880. Braving wintry precipitation and temperatures just above freezing, nearly 30 runners began the morning Tribute Run at the Maine Criminal Justice Academy in Vassalboro and made the 14-mile trek to the Fallen Officer Memorial in Augusta.
Apple detective to speak at Food for Thought luncheon
John Bunker
USM LAC Senior College will present apple historian John Bunker at its next Food for Thought luncheon on Friday, November 9 at noon.
Apples are John Bunker’s passion. He grows them, writes about them, lectures about them, and researches their history. He is also an apple detective, searching out varieties once thought to be extinct that are still quietly thriving on old Maine farms and fields.
CCU supports Greene Baptist Church Food Pantry
Community Credit Union recently presented the Greene Baptist Church Food Pantry with a donation check for $250. Located within the Baptist Church in Greene, the pantry is open to town residents on the first and third Thursday of every month from 1 to 3 p.m. They serve approximately 75 families per month and give out about 20 Thanksgiving Baskets each November. Adventure photographer to speak at ALT’s Annual Meeting
An adventure photographer based in Portland, Brian Threlkeld’s clients include Maine Outdoor Brands, Planet Dog, and Smartwool.
The Androscoggin Land Trust will host their Annual Meeting at the Hilton Garden Inn of Auburn on Tuesday, November 13, from 5 to 7:30 p.m. The event will feature ALT highlights from the past year, award recognition for outstanding impact, and the photography and words of guest speaker Brian Threlkeld, who will present a program called “Through the Lens of Adventure Photography: The Interconnectedness of Maine Land Conservation and Public and Economic Health.”
