ALT, Bird Club to host “The Future of Maine’s North Woods”
“The Future of Maine’s North Woods” will be explored in a public forum on Monday, November 7 at 7 p.m. in Heritage Hall at the Franco American Heritage Center at 46 Cedar St., Lewiston.
The agenda for the evening will explore three major public policy issues involving Maine’s North Woods: the current status of public land ownership in Maine; the proposed feasibility study for a North Woods National Park; and the future of the Land Use Regulation Commission (LURC).
The event is being co-sponsored by the Androscoggin Land Trust, Stanton Bird Club and Harward Center for Community Partnerships at Bates College.
YPLAA announces 2011 award recipients
The Young Professionals of the Lewiston-Auburn Area will award four individuals and one business with their annual awards at the YPLAA 2011 Annual Meeting.
The meeting will be held on Friday, October 28 at the Carriage House, 1119 Lisbon St., Lewiston. The evening begins with a social starting at 6:30 p.m., dinner at 7 p.m. and awards and comedians at 8 p.m.
This year’s YPLAA Award recipients are:
Dempsey Challenge raises over $1 million for Dempsey Center
The third annual Dempsey Challenge presented by Amgen attracted 3,834 runners, walkers and cyclists from 34 states, plus Canada, Dubai, Germany and Switzerland, and raised over one million dollars to benefit The Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope & Healing at Central Maine Medical Center.
The events took place during the weekend of October 8 and 9 at Simard-Payne Park in Lewiston.
The L.L.Bean 5K and 10K run/walk events took place on Saturday, Oct. 8, followed by Fundraising Rides of 10, 25, 50, 70 and 100 miles presented by Exergy Development Group the following day. Other highlights included the Amgen Breakaway from Cancer Survivor Walk, Auburn Firefighters Local 797 Kids’ Fun Run and the free, family-friendly Festival in the Park, which included the Concentra Health and Wellness Expo and live entertainment.
Laura Davis wins Amgen Breakaway from Cancer Survivor Award
Mother of five and 22-year cancer survivor Laura Davis of Buckfield has been named the 2011 Amgen Breakaway from Cancer® Survivor Award winner. The award is given to a cancer survivor involved in Central Maine community outreach and demonstrates a passion for helping others with cancer.
It is presented in conjunction with the annual Dempsey Challenge presented by Amgen, the primary fundraising event for The Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope & Healing at Central Maine Medical Center.
Davis was first diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma when her first-born daughter, Sarah, was just four-weeks-old and has dealt with six additional diagnoses over the years.
Professional women cyclists join Dempsey Challenge this weekend
Coryn Rivera and Kristin McGrath of the Peanut Butter & Co. TWENTY12 women’s professional cycling team will join actor Patrick Dempsey and thousands of participants in the third annual Dempsey Challenge presented by Amgen.
The run, walk and cycling fundraising weekend is scheduled for Oct. 8 and 9 in Lewiston. The events will host over 3,000 participants from 33 states and four countries. Funds raised through the Dempsey Challenge benefit The Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope & Healing at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston.
Rivera, 19, is one of the fastest rising stars of women’s cycling. She began riding at age 10 and is the winningest junior rider in USA history for both men and women. She’s won 32 Junior National Championship titles in road, track and cyclocross, plus a pair of bronze Junior World Championship medals. She currently has her sights set on the 2016 Olympics.

Free energy-upgrade forum for homeowners
A free forum for homeowners highlighting low-interest financing opportunities for home energy upgrades will be held at 6:30 p.m. on October 12 at Lewiston City Hall, 27 Pine Street.
The forum touts Efficiency Maine’s Property Assessed Clean Energy Loan Program (PACE). The evening is sponsored by the Lewiston Energy Committee, the Auburn Energy Committee, Maine Partners for Cool Communities, Efficiency Maine Trust and the Androscoggin County Chamber of Commerce.
Various presentations will be made to include Efficiency Maine’s Residential Program Specialist Dana Fischer talking about energy audits, upgrade basics and paying for energy efficiency and weatherization through the PACE Loan Program. A Maine PACE loan is taken by a property owner to finance the cost of making a qualified whole house energy upgrade with eligible energy savings improvements to the property.
Museum L-A offers tour of Lufthansa project
Museum L-A is offering a rare chance to see the Lockheed “Super Star” reconstruction project with a behind-the-scenes tour on Saturday, October 15. The tour begins at Museum L-A at 9 a.m. for a brief bus ride to the Lufthansa site at the Auburn-Lewiston Airport. The bus will return to Museum L-A around noontime.
Reconstruction of this historic airplane has captured the imagination of the L-A communities and has attracted aviation enthusiasts from far and wide. Lufthansa’s non-profit foundation purchased three rare Lockheed L-1649A Starliner aircraft in a private sale in Auburn and is overseeing the restoration of one of these aircraft. The “Super Star” was the culmination of propeller-driven transport aircraft. Lufthansa Technik began the challenging work in 2008 to restore a historic Lufthansa aircraft to airworthy condition.
YPLAA and Chamber to sponsor candidates’ forum
On Wednesday, October 12, the Young Professionals of the Lewiston-Auburn Area (YPLAA) and the Androscoggin County Chamber of Commerce will sponsor the Fourth Annual Candid Candidates, a chance for the public to a meet and hear directly from the candidates vying for local city council and mayoral seats.
“How important is your city to you? Would you like to learn more about the issues affecting local government in Lewiston and Auburn and have your opinions heard?” said Kelly Jaeger, YPLAA Betterment Co-Chair.
Final “Art Walk” of the season is Friday
On Friday, September 30, “Art Walk Lewiston Auburn” will transform the downtown areas of Lewiston and Auburn into art districts for the evening for the final time this season.
Over the course of the summer, Art Walk Lewiston Auburn has drawn over 1,000 art enthusiasts from the L-A community and beyond to the downtown area, showcasing over 75 local artists. This final event this year promises to be the largest, with “The Vault” and Captive Elements Art House and L/A Magazine hosting their grand-opening events on Lisbon Street during the Art Walk.
