3rd annual Sustainable Scarborough Day on October 5th

By Allison Carrier, Marketing & Communications Manager

The Town of Scarborough is hosting its third annual Sustainable Scarborough Day on Sunday, October 5, bringing together everyone from the environmentally conscious to the eco-curious for a day of learning and fun. The free event will be held from 10:00am-2:00pm at Wentworth School, 20 Quentin Drive on the municipal/school campus.

This is a family friendly event with activities for all ages. Meet with experts, local businesses, nonprofits, and enthusiasts on topics ranging from sustainable living, efficient homes, transportation, landscapes, recreation, waste management, land conservation, and climate action. Participating vendors include ecomaine, Evergreen Home Performance, Green & Healthy Maine, Maine Audubon, ME Powered Pastries, Scarborough Garden Club, and many more. The Scarborough Garden Club and Maine Audubon are teaming up to offer a native plant sale, as fall is a perfect time to add plants to your landscape. Common Roots Studio will also be there with their Mobile Art Bus to make sustainability-themed crafts.

Don’t miss ScapeGoats, a local business that transports goats to your property to clear your land of unwanted vegetation (and enrich the soil!). They’ll have some goats out grazing for you to meet and learn more about eco-friendly land management.

Sustainable Scarborough Day is also southern Maine’s largest National Drive Electric Month event. See a lineup of electric vehicles, learn about available incentives, and take one for a test drive. There will also be electric boats on display.

Bring a picnic for lunch, or enjoy something to eat from one the food trucks on site. The Maine Marimba Ensemble will be playing their unique Zimbabwean music on handcrafted marimbas from 11:00am-1:00pm.

“Scarborough’s focus on sustainability and conservation has grown over the past several years, and this event is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the great work that is happening throughout town,” says Jami Fitch, Sustainability Manager for the Town of Scarborough. “We hope for another beautiful, sunny day this year so lots of the community will join us!”

To shed further light on the mission of the event—spreading awareness and education around sustainability right in our community—the Scarborough Public Library is offering a week of related programming leading up to Sustainable Scarborough Day. See details at scarboroughlibrary.org under Upcoming Events.

The idea for Sustainable Scarborough Day began in 2022 with the Sustainability Committee and Conservation Commission as a collaborative effort. From its origins as a means of providing resources on the Inflation Reduction Act, the event evolved into celebrating sustainability in our community more widely. It also aligns with the Town’s other sustainability efforts, such as the recently completed Vulnerability Assessment that maps out future flood risks to inform strategic resilience planning, and the upcoming Climate Action Plan, intended to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and improve resiliency throughout the Town of Scarborough.

PRLT presented Community Impact Award

MAINE – Presumpscot Regional Land Trust (PRLT) would like to extend a huge Thank You to Evergreen Credit Union for honoring PRLT with their Community Impact Award.

What an honor! PRLT had a wonderful night at Evergreen’s Membership Appreciation Event—it was so wonderful meeting so many of Evergreen’s members to talk about trails.

Evergreen is not a new partner for PRLT. They are an adopt-a-trail sponsor for both Mill Brook Preserve and the new Rivermeadow Nature Preserve in Westbrook. They also volunteer in many ways—including capturing drone images for PRLT and serving on the Rivermeadow Nature Preserve Outreach Committee. We so appreciate all of their support!

Give hope, stay prepared: Donate in Gorham with Red Cross

PORTLAND, ME – In September, the American Red Cross reminds people that giving blood now helps support patients the moment they need medical care. Donors of all types, especially those with types O positive and B negative blood, are asked to make an appointment to give.

National Preparedness Month is underway – a time to remember lifesaving blood products are an essential part of preparedness for every type of disaster, whether it be home fires or natural disasters, such as hurricanes, flooding and wildfires. Severe weather can disrupt blood collections by causing blood drive cancellations and impacting donors’ ability to give. Additionally, trauma patients may need blood product transfusions within minutes of entering emergency rooms. Those who give now could help someone in dire moments.

A little care goes a long way

People coming together to care for one another is the humanitarian spirit shared by our Red Cross community and fans of PEANUTS for the past 75 years. Those who come to give by Sept. 21 will receive an exclusive Red Cross x PEANUTS mystery bag with one of four special T-shirt designs, while supplies last. Thousands of golden tickets are also randomly hidden in mystery bags throughout the country. Donors who find a golden ticket when they open their bag can redeem it through an online form for all four T-shirts!

Bonus: Those who come to give platelets Sept. 22-Oct. 5, 2025, can also receive a classic Red Cross x PEANUTS sweatshirt featuring Snoopy as the coolest beagle in town, Joe Cool, while supplies last. See RedCrossBlood.org/Peanuts for details on all offers.

To book a time to give blood or platelets, visit RedCrossBlood.org, call 1-800-RED CROSS or use the Red Cross Blood Donor App.

Additionally, all who come to give Sept. 22-Oct. 19, 2025, will receive a $10 Amazon.com Gift Card by email. Visit RedCrossBlood.org/Fall for details.
