Museum LA to host Old Fashioned Holiday Celebration

Do you remember sitting on Santa’s lap at B. Peck’s department store and “fishing” for a special toy? Well, Museum L-A plans to bring some of Peck’s holiday traditions back to life for its Old Fashioned Holiday Celebration on Saturday, December 8 from noon to 4 p.m.

The event will feature Santa and the “fish pond,” as well as the Great Falls Railroad Club, who will help recreate the model train that was a staple of Peck’s annual Christmas display. A “Guess Who?” wall of photographs from the 1940s through the 1970s will feature generations of local youngsters visiting Santa at Pecks.

“We are delighted at the response we’ve had from the community as the buzz about this has spread,” said Museum L-A Executive Director Rachel Desgrosseilliers. “The photos are pouring in! We’ll be taking them until December 3, so check your attics!”

The event will also showcase many features that are part of the community’s collective holiday memories, including period decorations and displays reflecting a variety of traditions in Lewiston-Auburn. Remember the glittering Christmas tree at Gooseberry Barn? Come and enjoy it again – or for the first time. A Fontanini creche will be set up, as will displays from local Jewish and Greek Orthodox communities. PhotoFinish will be on hand to take photos of children with Santa.

In the spirit of the Museum’s ongoing “Power of Music” exhibit, which explores the importance of music in the lives of the community’s ancestors, the event will also feature a holiday musical gathering similar to one many local families would have had in their homes. Professional and amateur musicians are invited to bring their instruments with them for the afternoon to take part in an informal “jam session.” Museum L-A’s own piano will be available for anyone who wants to play some songs or sing some carols.

“Museum L-A is all about preserving cherished memories and creating new ones,” Desgrosseilliers continued. “Here’s an opportunity for generations to connect once again in a new and special tradition.”

Light refreshments will be served. Admission is $5, children ages 6 and under free. For more information, contact Museum L-A at 333-3881 or info@museumla.org, or see www.museumla.org or facebook.com/Museum L-A.
